Introduction

With a century-old legacy dating back to 1921, Nanchang University Jiangxi Medical College traces its roots to the founding of Jiangxi Public Medical Collegewhere Mr. He Huankui served as the first president. Through a dynamic journey of development, the institution evolved strategically: renamed Jiangxi Provincial Medical College in 1952, it adopted the name Jiangxi Medical College in 1953. In June 1958, it integrated the Eighth Military Medical School and its affiliated 173rd Army Hospital, retaining its core identity. Following a brief merger with Jiangxi College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (19691972) to form Jiangxi Medical University, it reverted to Jiangxi Medical College in November 1972. In August 2005, it merged with Nanchang University as the School of Medicine, officially adopting its current nameNanchang University Jiangxi Medical Collegein 2014.

For over a century, the college has steadfastly upheld its founding spirit of Lofty Virtues and Excellent Medical Skillsand embodied the ethos of Preciseness, Diligence, Solidarity, Creativity. Guided by these principles, it has cultivated more than 160,000 distinguished medical professionals who have excelled at home and abroad, making remarkable contributions to global healthcare and medical advancement. Among its illustrious alumni are Zhao Baige, Ding Jian, Zheng Xiaoyan, He Jiang, Rao Yi, Guan Yi, Zhang Wei, Xu Ruihua, and Zeng Mushengleaders and innovators shaping the future of medicine.

The College boasts a well-structured academic framework encompassing 11 core academic units, including the School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Public Health, School of Pharmacy, School of Nursing, Nanchang University Queen Mary School, Huankui Academy, the First Clinical School, the Second Clinical School, School of Rehabilitation, School of Stomatology, and School of Ophthalmology & Optometry. It also has 2 teaching & experiment centers:  the Clinical Medicine Center and the Center of Biomedical Analysis. The college maintains a network of 5 directly affiliated and 8 non-directly affiliated hospitals.

The College offers 14 undergraduate majors: Clinical Medicine, Anesthesiology, Medical Imaging, Optometry, Stomatology, Rehabilitation Therapy, Basic Medical Sciences, Preventive Medicine, Medical Laboratory Technology, Pharmacy, Clinical Pharmacy, Nursing, Intelligent Medical Engineering, and Geriatric Medicine and Health. Among these, there is 1 national key specialty and 8 national first-class major construction points. The college has 5 doctoral programs in first-class disciplines and 2 professional doctoral degree categories. Additionally, it offers 8 master’s degree programs in first-class disciplines and 6 professional master’s degree categories. The college also has 3 postdoctoral research stations in Clinical Medicine, Basic Medical Sciences, and Pharmacy. Currently, there is 1 MOE (the Ministry of Education) Ideological and Political Education Demonstration Course and 1 MOE Award-Winning Teaching Team. Furthermore, the College boasts several key national teaching platforms, including the National Virtual Simulation Experiment Center, the National Clinical Experiment Teaching Demonstration Center, the National Clinical Teaching and Training Demonstration Center, the National Off-campus Practical Teaching Base for College Students, and the National Outstanding Talents Education and Training Program.

The college boasts a distinguished and robust academic team, comprising 630 faculty and 1,816 clinical teachers. Among its academic elites are 1 Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 24 national-level high-end talents, whose leadership drives the college’s excellence in teaching, research, and medical practice. The College hosts a total of 8,642 full-time undergraduate students and 563 international students, alongside 5,365 full-time master’s candidates (including 18 international students) and 949 doctoral candidates.

The College’s research infrastructure includes 1 National-Local Joint Engineering Research Center, 16 National Key Clinical Specialties, and 5 National Drug Clinical Trial Institutions. It also houses 1 MOE Medical Basic Research Innovation Center, 1 MOE Engineering Research Center, and 1 MOE Organoid Biobank. Additionally, it maintains over 80 provincial-level platforms, such as Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratories, and 2 independent university-level research institutes.

In recent years, the College has been honored with the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award (ranked second among participating institutions) and the Second Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award for Outstanding Achievements from the Ministry of Education. It has also secured 1 project from the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and 1 from the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars. A total of 7 disciplines have entered the top 1% in the ESI global rankings. Among them, Clinical Medicine has ranked in the top 1.122‰, Pharmacology & Toxicology in the top 1.405‰, and Molecular Biology & Genetics along with Biology & Biochemistry in the top 5‰.
